Slavery is Woven into the Fabric of Manchester

This is an A3 screenprint on white card with a printed panel on fabric. This section is glued to the reverse of the print, with book binding adhesive, and hangs through the front on the card. It will fray if handled but the message is still legibly. I recommend this piece is framed.
I have made 100 limited edition prints in this first edition of the message.
Each screenprint is signed and dated.
In this design I introduced a message we do not discuss enough. For several years I have been researching the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and the Industrial Revolution, with a specific focus on the economic wealth generated in Manchester and the price that was paid in human life. Initial research led to develop a greater understanding of how the legacy of this impacts of people today, in terms of privilege, hierarchy, inclusion and opportunity. I have had the privilege to hear primary accounts from Mancunians, speak to professors, look at archives, artworks, read some fascinating books and found many amazing resources and people online. I have been appalled and haunted by some of the atrocities committed to people historically and want to ensure we understand the very present issues today.
This piece was made to start a dialogue. Please join the conversation. It is important that we don’t just determine we are not racist but proactively know how to be an ally to others in our community and around the world.
